Holistic Medicine Quiz

This is from a crossword puzzle in my book The Alchemy of the 5 Elements, fun to quiz yourself on things, as a way to remember knowledge. The Answers are Below and you can quiz friends and family. I will periodically design new quizzes to come to check out and quiz family and friends for an afternoon of learning. So keep coming back and give feedback on what topics you would like me to focus my quizzes on.

I gave my daughter quizzes on Anatomy and Physiology at age 7 and 8, based on courses for passing the National Massage Board Exam and after two - three times she scored between 98 - 100 simply from repeated questions and answers. Quizzing yourself and others can be a fun way to learn and have quality time together.  This quiz is based on questions and answers related Primarily to the 7 Chakra's, 5 Element System, Herbs, Nutrients, Anatomy and Physiology.  Keep in mind that the Elements are related to Chinese 5 Elements. The Ayurvedic 5 Elements have different organ and sense organ associations and are not in the Quiz. I will post a quiz below this one on Ayurvedic Elements too.

Write down the answers from the Chart Below. Give this Quiz to yourself, family and friends and contemplate why the ancients saw these relationships. Even though the Chinese and Ayurvedic senses are different they saw different aspects. Wind blows on the skin and caresses are skin and it is the air that holds the earth in place. We hear music through the ethers in space. We taste and drink in waters from with our tongue, etc... Although the Chinese elements make more sense to me in some ways, there are different angles in which we view the world.

Ayurvedic and Chinese 5 Elements Comparisons

Ayurvedic Medicine describes the Elements through a different perspective as Chinese 5 Elements and so for clarification I thought I would add this page to this book. A great site for Ayurvedic Element descriptions is http://www.holistic-online.com/ayurveda/ayv-basis-five-great-elements.htm

In Ayurvedic the organs and systems are more described by action and more in terms of solid, gaseous, liquid, etc... Also Bitter in Ayurvedic is Cooling and Drying. Below are examples

                             Ayurvedic 5 Elements

Earth

Are the solid, bones, muscles, tissues

Water

Is the Liquids, blood, lymph, urine and waters that transport the goods

Fire

Is the power of transforming solids into liquids, and to gas and back again.

Air

Is the gas and oxygen in the body and it is air that is required for fire to burn

Ether

Is the Space - where everything happens.

Each system has its own way of looking at things and each has logic of its own if you contemplate the reasoning and serves a purpose for observation and reflection. The 6 Taste are Sweet, Salty, Bitter, Pungent, Sour and Astringent in Ayurvedic.Bitter in Ayurvedic is considered cooling and dry. However, I have attributed heat to bitter in its property of stimulating bile flow which heats and breaks things down in the Small Intestines in the Fire Element of Chinese 5 Element Theory.

The 7 Dhatu’s

Dhatu’s

Function and Purpose

Rasa (Plasma)

Rasa literally means ‘sap’ or ‘juice’. The primary function of ‘Rasa’ is to strengthen ‘rakta’ (blood) and provide the nourishment. Basically, it is the tissue fluids that consist of lymph and blood plasma. The Accessory tissues are the breast milk and the menstrual blood.

Rakta (Blood)

Is said to be constituted from the metabolic refinement of the Rasa Dhatu. The primary function of the Rakta Dhatu is the nourishment of the body and is the preserver of life.

Mansa (Muscles)

Is formed from the rasa and rakta dhatu and the basic cover of bone and for the structure of body.

Meda (Fat)

Are the finer part of the mansa dhatu also known as fatty tissue. They keep the lubrication between various body organs and help in maintaining right internal temperature.

Asthi (Bone)

Are the finer essence of the Meda Dhatu, which is converted into the most solid form of the Dhatu’s and give the basic structure to the body.

Majja (Bone marrow)

Is the finer essence of the Asthi Dhatu. It is basically a semi- solid substance, yellow and red in color whose primary function is in providing the filling for the bone. It is also found inside the brain and spinal cord.

Shukra (Reproductive fluid or Semen)

Is produced from the most refined essence of the Bone Marrow. It is the cause of Ojas, which is actually the essence of all the seven Dhatu’s. The Shukra is responsible for vitality and energy of the body. Ojas is the essence of all digestion that maintains the inherent immunity and strength of the body. Ojas is also called vigor in Ayurveda.
